Ted Morgan was New Zealand's first individual gold medal winner, winning the welterweight class in boxing at the 1928 Amsterdam games.

He was not, however, the first New Zealander to win a gold medal. That honour went to swimmer Malcolm Champion, winning gold as part of the Australasian 4 x 200 metre relay team at the 1912 Stockholm games.

The first New Zeland woman to win an Olympic gold medal was Yvette Williams, winning the long jump at the 1952 Helsinki Games.
