That was Billy Martin whose single scored Hank Bauer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Yankees a 4-3 victory in Game 6 and a 4-2 games victory in the 1953 World Series. That hit was Martin's 12th and is still a record (tied with Roberto Alomar in 1993, Marquis Grissom in 1996, and Paul Molitor in 1993) for number of base hits in a 6 game World Series.

You name it, it happened.

The game went twelve innings.

Boston was down 6-3 in the 8th, when they got a three-run, pinch-hit homer to tie the game. They had bases loaded, nobody out in the 9th, when a perfect throw to the plate nailed what would have been the winning run. Dwight Evans made a game-saving catch in the 11th. And it all ended with a home run by Carlton Fisk that BARELY hit the pole. If (like me) you watched the entire game, you'll never forget watching Fisk trying to make the ball stay fair.
