The 16 teams of the NFL were aligned in 4 divisions: 2 divisions composing the Western Conference and 2 divisions composing the Eastern Conference. The winners of each division within a conference would play each other for the conference championship with the winners of those games playing each other for the NFL Championship. This arrangement occurred between the 1967 and 1969 season. The division alignments were as follows:

The Giants and Saints rotated each year because the other Eastern Conference teams desired a share in the gate receipts and TV from the games in New York. The division members played each other twice a season (home and away). The Saints were an expansion team and because of seniority, they would lose out on the guarantee of playing the Giants in New York for the receipts.

The 10 teams in the American Football League were the New York Jets, Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), Boston Patriots (now New England Patriots), Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Cincinnati Bengals.
