For many years, no one wore number 69. Mel "The Mangler" Angelstad broke the seal when he sported it for the Washington Capitals during the 2003-2004 season. But after only two televised games, both he and the number were suddenly silenced amid rumours of controversy with then newly inducted NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Andrew Desjardins took the road less traveled and brought 69 back to the ice cold arenas of the world's fastest game in 2010-2011 when he suited up for the San Jose Sharks. With the season nearing completion, he has already played almost 8 games.

In a recent interview with The Hockey News, Desjardins commented "I think everyone knows why I wear it."
