Josh Gibson played in the Negro Leagues. The Baseball Hall of Fame recognizes that he hit "almost 800" home runes in his career. The Negro Leagues did not keep statistics like MLB. Many called him the "Black Babe Ruth", but in light of Gibson's skills, perhaps Babe Ruth should have been known as the "White Josh Gibson."
The most by active players (as of 9/9/2008) is Ken Griffey, Jr. with 609.
