Women began competing in athletics at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. The first two events to be decided were on July 31, the 100 meter dash and discus throw. The winner of the 100 meter dash was Betty Robinson of the United States and the discus throw winner was Halina Konopacka of Poland.

Women were first allowed to compete in Olympic gymnastics at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. There were no individual gold medals awarded, only medals for team all-around. The winner of the all-around gold medal was the team from The Netherlands which was comprised of Estella Agsteribbe, Jacomina van den Berg, Alida van den Bos, Petronella Burgerhof, Elka de Levie, Helena Nordheim, Ans Polak, Petronella van Randwijk, Hendrika van Rumt, Jud Simons, Jacoba Stelma, and Anna van der Vegt. These ladies were the first to win an Olympic gold medal in women's gymnastics.

Gymnasts Mariya Gorokhovskaya of the Soviet Union and Margit Korondi-Plachy of Hungary at the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki.

Mariya won 7 medals (2 gold, 5 silver) and Margit won 6 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze). Mariya's 7 medals is an all time Olympic record for medals won by a woman at one Games.
