Libby Riddles - 1985 - First woman to win the Iditarod.
The first to finish the race. The race starts on Willow Lake and ends in Nome. It is about 1000 miles long.
Mary Shields was one of two women to be the first to participate in the Iditarod Trail Race in 1974, and the first to finish the Iditarod. She placed 23rd then.
Libby Riddles was the first: she won the 1985 Iditarod race. Susan Butcher was the second woman to win it, in 1986.

Mary Shields was one of two women to be the first to participate in the Iditarod Trail Race in 1974, and the first to finish the Iditarod. She placed 23rd then. Her first race experience came shortly after she came to Alaska. In October some friends of hers let her borrow 3 of their dogs and a sled for her to use in hauling water and firewood. From this experience she learned a love for dogs and mushing.
6 dogs is the minimum number of dogs that you have to finish with in the Iditarod.
The first Jr. Iditarod race took place in March of 1978.
