The first of only 2 players ever to win the men's singles whilst unseeded was Boris Becker in 1985. At this time, there were only 16 seeded players, as opposed to the 32 of the modern era, which meant that his ranking of 20 was not good enough for a seeding. (The other player to do so was Goran Ivanisevic, who was a wildcard entry into the tournament in 2001)
