You have to have an athletic horse to start with. You need to take lessons on how to ride and train your horse also if you are just beginning. It is important to work on the pattern slowly at first so that your horse has a good pattern before you run it. You need to make sure that your horse can do the pattern perfect every time at a walk, then a trot, and finally a lope before your attempt to run him. You want to make sure that he has good turns, pockets, and leaves to the next barrel also. Depending on the horse, size, and athletic ability will depend on how you run him. For example, if you have a bigger horse, he will probably need a bigger pocket (space between him and the barrel) than say a smaller horse who is likely more flexible.

From my experience, barrel racing horses are often crazy, poorly trained horses that know only one thing: Run. They are often ridden with harsh bits because that's the only thing that can control them because again, they only know to run and that is all they've been trained to do. Not saying that all barrel racing horses are like that, but all that I've seen are. Not at all what you want for a first horse. You want an easy-going well-trained horse. I would advise a horse trained in reining. Horses trained for reining are super broke, calm, responsive well-trained horses. Not saying reining is the only way to get a horse like that, but any good reining horse is.

Well im a begainer too but I've had many seggestions. First you can run your horse twards a barrel slow him down to a slow lope and lope around the barrel. Second you have to teach your horse the pattern well enough to know what to do. Teach your horse when to slow down, speed up, and stop. If your horse does not stop well then after you pass the eyes then slow him down as much as you can, then turn him in a complete circle, this will force him to slow down. How is racing played?
Barrel racing is a rodeo event that involves you, your horse, and 3 barrels. It is a timed event. There are 3 barrels in the shape of a clover leaf. As you run in you go to the right side and turn the first barrel (but you can also go the other way and start at your left). Then you run to the second barrel and turn that then you are on your way to the 3rd and last barrel. as soon as you are done with that, you race home as fast as you and your horse can and to try and beat the clock. Barrel Racing is a very fun, but competitive sport. Some people think that to be a Barrel Racer you have to have an expensive horse but all you need is being able to enjoy such a fun and addicting sport!
