The first African-American general manager of a team in Major League Baseball was Bill Lucas of the Atlanta Braves. His actual title was vice president of player personnel, but team owner Ted Turner gave him all the duties of a GM. Lucas ran the ballclub from September 17, 1976 until his death from a massive stroke on May 5, 1979. He was 43.

In 1982, the Braves won the National League West Division title with many of the players that Lucas had brought into the organization.
