Tip O'Neill of the 1887 Cardinals, then known as the Browns, with 225 base hits.

1887 was the one season in MLB when walks were considered as base hits. When you add O'Neill's 50 walks to his 225 hits he winds up with 275. MLB considers O'Neill to have had 275 hits where most statisticians consider O'Neill to have 225.
