The privateer and slaver Francis Drake in 1580, in the 'Pelican', renamed the 'Golden Hind'. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I for his efforts and, as Sir Francis Drake, he defeated the Spanish Armada.

Vice Admiral Sir Francis Drake, born around 1540, died 27 January 1596, was the first Englishman to sail around the world. His voyage began in December 1577 and he returned in his famous ship, The Golden Hind, in September 1580. He was knighted in 1581 in recognition of his great achievement.

The first seaman to sail round the world was sir Francis Drake.However the world has not given this credit to him because he was a pirate, instead the credit is given to Fedinand Magelland
