Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates was elected unanimously to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, months after his death in a plane crash on New Year's Eve in 1972.

Clemente was a native of Puerto Rico and was elected to the Hall of Fame in a special waiver of the five year waiting period following the final year of playing.
