The first American to win 6 gold medals was Ray Ewry who won back to back gold in standing long jump, standing high jump, and standing triple jump at the 1900 Games in Paris and the 1904 Games in St. Louis.
While Ray won back to back gold at the 1900 and 1904 Games, there were other Americans that did also.
1) Lou Abell and John Exley were members of the U.S. coxed eights rowing team that won gold at the 1900 and 1904 Games.
2) John Flanagan won gold in hammer throw at the 1900 and 1904 Games.
3) Meyer Prinstein won gold in triple jump at the 1900 and 1904 Games.
The rowing event took place in July while the athletics events took place in August. That would make Abell and Exley the first to win gold medals in consecutive Olympics.
