Troy Aikman retired after the 2000 season and Tony Romo took over as starter in the 2006 season.

1) 2001 - Quincy Carter started 8 games, Anthony Wright started 3 games, Ryan Leaf started 3 games, and Clint Stoerner started 2 games.
2) 2002 - Chad Hutchinson started 9 games and Quincy Carter started 7 games.
3) 2003 - Quincy Carter started 16 games with Chad Hutchinson as the backup.
4) 2004 - Vinny Testaverde started 15 games and Drew Henson started 1 game.
5) 2005 - Drew Bledsoe started all 16 games. Romo was the backup but did not throw a pass all season.

When Romo joined the Cowboys as a free agent in 2003, Quincy Carter was the starting quarterback and Chad Hutchinson was the backup. Romo was thought to be expendable, and the organization had little faith he would make the team since he was brought in undrafted purely to work with the practice squad.

As the years passed, Romo developed quickly and showed more and more talent in practice and the preseason, catching the eyes of both the fans and then-head coach Bill Parcells.

In 2006, Romo's progression, paired with starter Drew Bledsoe's regressing skills, forced Parcells to bench the veteran QB during halftime of a game versus the New York Giants. Romo started the second half and has played ever since.

Romo has since broken numerous Dallas Cowboys records, including marks belonging to greats such as Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

After Troy Aikman's retirement, four quarterbacks started games for the 2001 Dallas Cowboys: Quincy Carter (eight starts), Anthony Wright (three), Ryan Leaf (three) and Clint Stoerner (two). The Cowboys ended the regular season with a 5-and-11 record.
