Henry Knox was born 25jul1750 in Boston and died 25oct 1806 in Thomaston, Maine.

He was a General Officer in the Revolutionary War and was the first Secretary of War of the US. He is most famous for hauling the canon, powder and shot captured from the British at Ft Ticonderoga to the siege of Boston.

During the winter of 1775--76 General George Washington sent him to Fort Ticonderoga (Upstate NY) to move captured British artillery there ... artillery totaling approx. 60 tons, using sleds, oxen, horses, and men to transport the guns over snow and ice 300 miles to Boston. The weapons were used to drive the British from there, and ultimately formed the core for the Revolutionary artillery.

In 1778, Knox distinguished himself in commanding the artillery at the Battle of Monmouth (NJ,) and in 1781 at the Siege of Yorktown.

He was promoted to Major General, and at the end of the war, succeeded Washington as commander of the army (Dec1783).
