Alexander Obolensky who was born in Petrograd [St Petersburg] on 17 February 1916. His death occurred during training when his Hawker Hurricane crashed on Martlesham Heath in Suffolk [26 years old]. He made his debut for England at Twickenham in a match against New Zealand on 4th January 1936 scoring two tries. The Obolensky lecture, on Rugby, named in his honour, is presented annually. ∙ 13y agoHis name was Alexander Obolensky, he was a Russian Rurikid Prince. He played rugby union for England and scored what is reknowned as 'The Greatest Ever Twickenham Try'.
Alexander Obolensky was killed in an accident in a Hawker Hurricane, going into a ravine at the end of the runway at Martlesham Heath Air Force Base, on March 29th 1940. He was just 24 years old. He is buried in Ipswich New Cemetery.
