The "shot heard round the world" is the term given to the first shot of the American Revolution. In Baseball lore, however, the term refers to Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants home run off Ralph Branca of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the third game of a 3-game playoff to decide the National League pennant in 1951. The hit capped a Giants comeback from a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the 9th inning at the Polo Grounds. This comeback is also often referred to as the "miracle of Coogan's Bluff", the area in NYC in which the Polo Grounds stood. The Giants then met the New York Yankees in the World Series with the Yankees taking the title 4 games to two. Little be known to many sports fans, an up and coming young star was on deck, awaiting his chance to bring glory back to the Giants. He went by the name of Wille Mays. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 'shot heard around the world' was a term given to a home run hit by Bobby Thomson off of Ralph Branca in 1951 to win the deciding game of a three game playoff to give the New York Giants the National League pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

'Twas April of seventeen hundred and seventy five - now hardly a man is still alive

Who knows of the that fateful midnight ride

And the silversmith who helped turn the tide

Against British tyranny's foul head

And the ragtag militia that rose instead.

No one knows. It could have been somebody who was not a soldier who wanted a good shot at the redcoats. Or it could have been redcoat firing a shot at the Americans because he hated them so much, or vice versa. Or, it could have been an accident when someone accidentally shot their gun. Like I said, no one knows.
