This was made for Sears by Crosman. It is a Crosman model 600. It was made for Sears from 1960-1970 under the Higgins name. Value: 100%=$295, 90%=$195, 60%=$145, 20%=$100
I was at a gun show in TX (Jul 2010) and was offered $125 for my JC Higgins Model 20-12; however, that was a dealer.
You first have to determine who made the rifle since JC Higgins was a brand name used by Sears. Sears purchased rifles from several different manufacturers (Winchester, High Standard, and Marlin to name a few) and had their name (Sears or JC Higgins) applied. When you have determined who actually made the gun, a JC Higgins marked model is worth about 10-20% less than the manufacturer's model.
Likely is a Savage Model 24 made for Sears under the JC Higgins name. Most of those run about $225, depending on condition.
Is it a shotgun or rifle? Caliber/gauge? Not a model number I have seen. They are usaully marked something like J.C. Higgins Model 20, 101.1, 583.13, 583.2078 etc.. Without more info, no way to know who made it. Could be be Sako, Savage, Marlin, High Standard, Stevens
The JC Higgins Model 20 is a well-made firearm. Provided you have it checked by a competent gunsmith, it can handle any standard 12ga 2 3/4" shotshell. If the gun is not choked 'FULL' you should be able to use slugs.
