Larry Holmes by a TKO when Ali could'nt answer the bell for round 11. This however is not quite the same as a genuine knockout where the fighter can not beat the referee's count of 10 after a knockdown. Ali was known as having a very good chin and incredible recuperative powers.
Larry Holmes
Yes he stopped Patterson in the 1st round to win the Title in 1962.
Tko stands for technical knock-out, which means that either the referee stopped the fight, the corner threw in the towel, or one fighter quit. ko means knock out, which means that one fighter didn't beat the ref's ten count.
A knockout occurs when a fighter is knocked to the canvas, and receives a 10 count from the referee before he is able to stand back up, and able to continue the fight. A TKO, actually stands for a technical knock out (Is this what you men by total knock out?) - and refers to a fighter who is still physically on his feet, but who is either phsically unable to continue due to an injury - or the referee deems him to be unable to continue the fight due to his being impaired and unable to defend himself.
On March 24, 1975, Ali fought Chuck Wepner in Cleveland, a fight that was to inspire the Academy Award winning movieRocky. Ironically, however, it was Ali's opponent who provided the inspiration for history's most famous fictional pugilist. Wepner was a journeyman fighter who had been earning his living as a liquor salesman and security guard. Wepner had been dubbed "The Bayonne Bleeder" and, although he was ranked, he was considered hapless. Wepner, however, trained for two months and although he lost on a technical knock-out in the 15th round, he managed to knock Ali down with a body shot in the 9th. Sylvester Stallone saw the match in person and the concept of RockyBalboa - an unknown club fighter who goes 15 rounds with the heavyweight champion - was born. Heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, the character portrayed by Carl Weathers, was loosely basedon Ali.

if a boxer gets knocked down, and doesn't get up after the referee counts to ten, then it's recorded as a ko (knockout). A TKO (technical knock out) is when a fighter cannot continue or defend himself, whether he can stand or not.
