As of my knowledge cutoff of September 2021, the world record for the fastest marathon time is held by Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, who ran the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles) in a time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds on September 16, 2018, at the Berlin Marathon. However, it's important to note that records are constantly being broken and updated.

That was Ethiopian Abebe Bikila at the 1960 Games in Rome. He set an Olympic record time of 2:15:16.2 and became the first African to win an Olympic gold medal. Bikila also won the marathon at the 1964 Games but wore shoes in that race.
