A common measurement on how good individual skiers are is often the total number of World Cup races won during the skiing career. These include the downhill,Super G,Slalom,

Giant Slalom and the combined.

Today it is Bode Miller , raced in over 400 World Cups against the best, including Digago

and Aksel. In the past there was Raich and of course Jean Claude Killy.

"He doesn't train all summer, he comes back and wins three medals. Only Bode can do it," said Liechtenstein's Marco Buechel, competing at his sixth Olympics. "If I wouldn't train all summer and come back, I would crash every second gate. His way of skiing is unique. His talent is immense."

Ingemar Stenmark leads everyone with 86 World Cup wins but only won the GS and Slalom. Only Bode,Kjetil Andre Aamodt,Marc Girardelli and Pirmin Zurbriggen has wins

in each discipline.

However, this is only for the racing discipline, and there is an equally strong argument that today's best skier is a freeskier-one who competes in pipe, slopestyle, big air, freeride competitions, or simply films segments for ski movies. Along this line, a case could be made for Candide Thovex, who has won X Games gold in superpipe, slopestyle, big air, as well as the 2010 Freeride World Tour title, or Tanner Hall, who, like Thovex, has won the X Games trifecta as well as proved himself in numerous film segments. Needless to say, both men are legends up there with Miller, Killy, and any racer.

Note for 2010:Competition change

The only competition change for the 2010 Vancouver Games involves the super-combined. The super-combined incorporates one run each of downhill and slalom, with medals being awarded to the three fastest racers based on their combined times in the two runs. The predecessor to the super-combined - the combined - incorporated one downhill run and two slalom runs.

Simon Dumont is definitely the best at all freestyle

It's hard to say who garnered the most "fame" as an Olympic ski racer. I think the greatest Alpine skier was Jean Claude Killy from France. Killy won three gold medals at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble France - in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Downhill. He is the only Olympic alpine skier to ever win that triple crown of Olympic ski racing. He was very much the gentleman racer, endearing him to crowds far more than the bragging Alberto Tomba, although Tomba is now probably more well known! Tomba dominated the technical disciplines (slalom and giant slalom) in the late 80's and early 90's, and he did win more overall Olympic medals - 5 in total over the course of three Olympics, a pretty remarkable feat (2 gold in Calgary in '88, a gold and silver in Albertville in '92, and a silver in Lillehammer in '94). But he was never able to break Killy's record. Anyone who has ever raced, or knows alpine racing, knows what an incredible accomplishment it was for Killy to win gold medals in those three disciplines in one Olympics.

Incidentally, killy was a member of the IOC from '95 to 2008.

For pure infamy you'd also have to acknowledge Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards from Great Britain, who competed in ski jumping in Calgary in '88 - and finished last in both the 70 and 90m events he jumped in!! He was the darling of the press and even appeared on some talk shows. The more he lost the more people loved him! Edwards was 10kg heavier than his nearest competitor and wore thick glasses - which kept fogging up and blocking his vision. The Italian press said he was not a ski jumper but a ski "dropper"! There is an IOC rule now that is named after Eddie - The IOC instituted what became known as the Eddie the Eagle Rule, which requires Olympic hopefuls to compete in international events and place in the top 30 percent or the top 50 competitors, whichever is the lesser. In my opinion, Eddie embodied the true spirit of the Olympics - the underdog, the little guy who gets a shot. The IOC considered his actions dangerous and the ski jumping community accused him of mocking their sport. You can read Eddie's story here ....

A movie about the life of Eddie is being planned by Irish Film maker Declan Lowney
