Yes - I am a kick boxer and if I didn't wear one I would now be an Opera Singer ;)

Wearing a cup is essential for most contact sports. What is unfortunate is many youth of today take their 'invincible' attitudes out onto the playing field (which can prove disasterous).

In Baseball, all players should wear a cup. Foul tips, wild pitches, bullet line drives, sliding/colliding base runners (all at high speeds) can happen too fast for players to try to react in such a way to keep their groin from getting a very unpleasant surprise. Most major-leaguers do (which explains why their grabbing themselves and adjusting themselves just when the cameras are on them).

In football, all players should wear a cup. In some youth organizations, it is a requirement, but high schoolers, college players and pros generally don't. Part of it is the 'macho' thing, some of it because their pants are so form-fitting.

Hockey probably has the highest percentage of cup wearers. Flying hockey sticks and checking are as common as missing teeth. Getting whacked by a hockey stick in that area would likely lead to severe and irreversible injury.

Now, the key to a more comfortable cup wear is picking the right size and right style. Way back when, there was just two sizes and one style. Now there are usually three (sometimes four) sizes and multiple styles. You can still get the flat ones, there are 'banana' styles, contoured styles, and a new style called "The Nutty Buddy." Sizes are in youth (usually age 12 or under), teen (12 to 15 or so); and adult (15 and older). The web is chock full of online stores and options - which may be better than the local sporting goods store (who always seems to be out of the size you need - don't they?)

I've played contact sports most of my life, buy a NUTTY BUDDY! It is worth the extra money. Your "boys" will thank you for it!

The size that adequately protects the vital areas of the groin.

Inside joke: In sporting goods stores that sell cups, guys come in and won't buy the "small" or "medium" because they think the size relates to holding capacity not waist measurement. Counter staff of the female persuasion get quite a laugh out of this, but they've learned never to suggest "You look like a 'small' to me."

Most common cup size on bra?

The average woman wears a 36C, but at least 80% of women wear bras that don't fit them so the true average size should be 34DD. Cup sizes are relative to the band size, so the average cup size should be the same for each band size (ie DD cup.)

When were cups and athletic supporters first used in professional baseball?

The actual answer to this question is shrouded in history. But the BIKE Athletic Company based in Knoxville, TN has stated in its athletic supporter products in recent years that it invented the athletic supporter as we know it in 1874. So I would think that athletes would have begun wearing jockstraps for sports in the late decades of the nineteenth century. I have a book in my personal library entitled: Baseball Archaeology: Artifacts from the Great American Pastime (San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1993). On pages 38-39 is the first known "Safety Cup" worn by catcher Claude Berry in 1916. I believe this steel athletic cup is enshrined in the Baseball Museum in Cooperstown, NY. One would have to research past editions of the Rules for Major League Baseball for mandatory use of jocks and cups by players for a more accurate clue for this question. Athletic supporters and cups have evolved in sophistication and comfort over the years. Most cups worn by baseball players these days are of the banana cup variety, of which the Original Banana Cup, the BIKE CUP, and the XO Pro Cup are the best examples. A boy should wear a jock/cup for little league and continue through his life playing sports. As a boy grows and matures like from grades 5 and up a regular jockstrap should be introduced as the Best thing to protect his family jewels. As boys are growing by age 12 if they start wearing boxers a simple swimmer jock should be worn daily under their boxers for support. eg.. Bike swimmer jock or Bike reg straps work great.

How do you put A Penis Cup on?

A "penis cup" is worn to protect the penis and the balls or for reasons of "chastity" in some religious beliefs. A "penis cup" is usually referred to as a "cup-protector" or as a "nut-cup". A cup should be worn inside a cup-jockstrap which is similar to a regular jockstrap but is a jockstrap made with a pouch to hold the cup. Some athletic briefs or shorts are made with a pouch to put a cup into. There are different sizes of cups, for youth, teenagers, and adult men. Also, different brands of cups are different in their shape and size. The "traditional" cup is triangular shaped and the "banana" cup is shaped to contour differently to the body. To put a cup on, you insert the cup into the cup-jockstrap or into the briefs or shorts which are made to hold a cup. Then you step into the jockstrap and pull it on, or pull the briefs or shorts on like you do when you put underwear on. The testicles fit into the lower part of the cup. With the triangular shaped cup, you can allow your penis to hang down or you can lift it up and lay it across the inside top part of the cup. With the banana shaped cup, your penis has to be allowed to hang down. To function properly, the cup must fit real tight against your body so that the impact of a blow will be transferred against your body and not against your penis or balls. Some briefs or athletic shorts which are made to hold a cup do not hold the cup tight against the body. To ensure a tight fit, you can wear compression shorts over the cup-jockstrap or over the briefs or shorts.
