I vote for Ty Cobb as the best hitter and best batting average even though Ted Williams had more home runs, Ty Cobb had 1535 more hits overall, scored more runs, had more extra-base hits, and had 50% less strike outs. Ty Cobb with the Detroit Tigers has the highest lifetime average of .366 while Ted Williams with Boston lifetime average was .344. The highest average in one year belongs to Hugh Duffy with Boston in 1894 with a .440 average. Ty Cobb broke the .400 mark two years in a row .420 in 1911 and .409 in 1912. Ted Williams only broke the .400 mark once and he is the last person to break the .400 mark in 1941 with a .406 average. In 7,706 at-bats, Williams struck out only 709 times, while Ty Cobb had 11,434 at-bats and struck out only 357 times.
