On April 26, 1989, Ozzie Smith of the home-standing St. Louis Cardinals hit a fly ball toward the left-field corner that Mitchell grabbed barehanded instead of with his gloved hand. "I was running as hard as I could, and it just came back on me," said Mitchell, who would be named National League Most Valuable Player for the '89 season. "All I could do was stick up my hand and there it was."
