Batting by Pitchers in the World Series

From Great Hitting Pitchers, edited by L. Robert "Bob' Davids, published 1979

Although there have been flashes of hitting ability by hurlers in World Series games, no hurler had sustained

superior performance at bat. Ken Holtzman had a homer and double in four trips for Oakland in 1974, which

was the second year of the DH in regular season play in the American League. That gave him four extra-base

hits in World Series play, the most of any pitcher and a career slugging percentage of .833.

Jack Bentley had the best batting average-.417 on 5 hits in 12 trips. Dutch Ruether hit two triples and also

batted .364 in 7 World Series games. Dave McNally of the Orioles collected only two hits in 16 trips, but both

were home runs. One was a grand slam, giving him a total of 6 runs batted in. Even Babe Ruth had only one hit

in 11 at bats while pitching in the Series for the Red Sox. Red Ruffing could collect only six hits in 34 trips.

This included three at bats as a pinch hitter, which itself is quite a compliment for a Series pitcher.

Here is a list of some of the more productive batters, including those with long service, among World Series

hurlers. The cumulative records include only those with more than 10 at bats.

Several pitchers have hit home runs in the World Series. The first to do it was Jim Bagby of the Cleveland Indians in 1920. The most recent was Joe Blanton of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

It has never happened in the Majors. (that I know of)

Pitchers have hit 32 walk off home runs in MLB history ... the last time being April 25, 1986 by Craig Lefferts of the San Diego Padres who hit a home run off Greg Minton of the Giants with 1 out in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Padres a 9-8 win. It was the only home run Lefferts hit in 132 career MLB at bats.

Wes Farrell is the only pitcher to hit two walk off home runs.
Yes, Bob Grim, playing for the Yankees against Boston, on Sept 5, 1957, hit a 3-run homer in the 9th to break a 2-2 tie. I saw the game and the announcer noted that Grim had not gotten a hit that season until he hit the home run. Frank Sullivan, the Red Sox pitcher, had a 2-hitter and a 2-0 lead going into the last of the eighth. Yankee manager, Casey Stengel, used most of his pinch hitters in the 8th and the team got 2 runs. After the Bosox did nothing in the top of the 9th, the Yanks had no one left on the bench to hit for Grim. With Lumpe and Slaughter on base, the pitcher sent one into the stands to win his own game!

Yes, that has happened three times in MLB:

1) Wes Farrell of the Cleveland Indians no hit the St. Louis Browns, winning 9-0, on April 29, 1931 and hit a home run and a double and had 4 RBIs.

2) Earl Wilson of the Boston Red Sox no hit the Los Angeles Angels, winning 2-0, on June 26, 1962. The home run was his only hit of the game.

3) Rick Wise of the Philadelphia Phillies no hit the Cincinnati Reds, winning 4-0, on June 23, 1971. He hit 2 home runs and had 3 RBIs in the game.

Only one no hitter has been pitched in the World Series and that was a perfect game in 1956 by Don Larsen of the New York Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
