Best Answer

That would depend on what team has the best winning percentage in the league. Generally, the wild card team plays the division winner with the best winning percentage. However, if the division winner with the best winning percentage is in the same division as the wild card team, then the wild card team will play the division winner with the second best winning percentage and the division winner with the best winning percentage will play the other division winner. MLB is the only major sport that sets up their playoff system this way.

This would keep the Yankees and Red Sox from playing in the first round of the playoffs.

Yes.In the NFL playoffs, teams play each other strictly by seed (3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5). Also, if the division winner was a 3 or 4 seed and the two wildcard teams came from that division, it would not be possible to keep teams from the same division from meeting in the wildcard round. This in different than the MLB playoffs where the wildcard team cannot play their division winner.

In the NFL playoffs why is it called Divisional Round when teams from same division can't play each other?

How is it decided which division plays which division in the baseball playoffs?

There are four teams from each league that make the playoffs; the three division winners anda fourthteam that hasthe best recordbut does not win their division. This fourth team is called the 'wildcard' team.In most cases, the division winner with the best overall season record plays the wildcard team and the other two division winners play each other. But, in the case where the wildcard team and thedivision winnerwith the best overall record come from the same division, thedivision winnerwith the second overall best record plays the wildcard team and thedivision winnerwith the best overall record plays the division winner with the third best overall record.
