He was drafted by the Milwaukee bucks in the 1st round (12th pick, 12 overall) of the 1972 NBA draft. Erving decided to go on and play in the ABA with the Virginia Squires for 2 seasons, before moving on to the New York Nets for 3 seasons (while leading them to 2 championships). Erving signed with the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA in 1976 and ended up playing there until his last season in 1986/87, while leading them to a championship in 1982/83.
