In rugby union does a line-out pass have to be over-head?

First of all, there are two types of lineouts: 1: Quick Lineout; No minimum of players need to be involved in a quick lineout, and you can only take a quick lineout immediatley after the ball goes into touch. A quick lineout DOES NOT need to be over-head. 2: Normal Lineout; There is a minimum of 3 players on each team for a normal line-out (usually more). A normal Lineout DOES need to be over-head*. *The reason a lineout should be taken over-head is that it is much easier to throw in a straight line.

Why do some rugby players wear bandages on their thighs?

The Rugby players that wear bandages around their thighs are predominantly those that compete in the lineout, the phase of play used to re-start a game when the ball has crossed a touch line. The bandages are meant to assist the players supporting the "jumpers" who compete for the ball at the lineout and are supposed to aid with grip. Some players even put the plastic tube from the inside of an elastoplast roll under the bandage to act as a "handle" for the player giving the support.
