How was rugby invented and why?

William Webb-Ellis from Rugby (the town) school in England. Whilst playing football he picked up the ball and put it over the goal line. this is where holding the ball and putting it over the line came from. The word try came from whe William put the ball over the line he said to the official 'was that a goal sir?' and then the official replied 'no but it was a good try'. A spectator watching thought that this could be made into a game and re made the rules and called the game Rugby from its founded area. William Webb-Ellis is well known as he is the full name of the rugby world cup 'the William webb-Ellis cup.'

Many believe that rugby was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis "with fine disregard for the rules of football (remember football was yet to split into the various codes) as played in his time at Rugby school, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game". Although it is worth pointing out that this is apocryphal as there is little in the way of evidence to substantiate this view, it is however, the popular view. So much so in fact that the international committee named the Rugby world cup the "William Webb Ellis Trophy".

Rugby was invented in a scholl in the town of rugby. A group of boys were playing football and one of them decided to pick the ball up they then went on to invent some rules and it became a reconised sport. The person who picked up the ball is known to be called 'Webb Eliss' and there is know a rugby brand named after him.

The concept of Rugby is attributed to William Web Ellis a private school pupil (of Rugby School Warwickshire England) who when playing football (soccer) in 1823 picked up the ball (which was allowed in that game at that time) and instead of retreating to pass the ball to a team member, as was the rule, he decided to run toward the opposing teams goal line. The idea caught on and the games developed as more Rugbians took to this new idea. The game went wider when students went to universities and the armed forces until in 1837 the Football Association decided that carrying the ball was to be outlawed, 6 clubs that liked the carrying concept left and formed the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and thereafter formalised that games rules.
