Ruth"s highest ever batting average led the Yankees- but not the league- in l923, this average was .393. The Mets only date from l960 and Shea Stadium was erected in l962 modernized somewhat to harmonize with the l964-65 Fair Grounds with which it shared subway and LIRR stops. There is your answer. Up to a point the NL Mets were (The successor to the Brooklyn Dodgers) as many personnel such as manager Gil Hodges came from that ballclub. they absorbed the Dodger"s fan market in Brooklyn. The New York Mets first season in MLB was 1962. Players on the team that season that had previously played for the Yankees were Marv Throneberry and Gene Woodling.
Throneberry's first game with the Mets was May 11, 1962 and Woodling's first game with the Mets was June 17, 1962.
