I think MLB is much more popular even though more young people are probably playing Basketball. MLB has the advantage of being the only thing to watch for the majority of the summer, and there's still that traditional aspect of Baseball that American families seem to like.
I'm an NBA fan as well, but for me to get really excited about it, there has to be something interesting happening. Even this year during what was a very exciting, albeit anticlimatic, playoffs, the only time I found myself really interested was during Game 7's or when LeBron was playing. I asked listeners on my podcast about this in May and discussed the same topic (http://www.danstake.com/2009/05/dans-take-weekly-podcast-512-on-nba.html) To me, the NBA needs to give you a reason to watch while baseball and football do not.
MLB may stand for several different things. It is most commonly understood to stand for "Major League Baseball", a baseball organization popular in the United States. In business and accounting it stands for "Material, Labor, Burden."
