there was never no original "8" - however from 1917/42 there were 10 teams that started out the nhl, but after the great depression and world war 2? 4 of the teams disbanded (Pittsburgh Pirates, Ottawa senators, Montreal maroons and New York Americans) after those 4 left? we were left with what they consider now, the "ORIGINAL 6" nhl teams (1) Detroit red wings (2) Boston briuns (3) Montreal canadians (4) New York rangers (5) Toronto maple leafs (6) Chicago Blackhawks - then in 1967 the nhl added 6 more teams (7) l.a. kings (8) Oakland seals (witch later folded) (9) Pittsburgh pengiuns (10) philadelphia flyers (11) minnesota north stars (later just the "stars" (12) st. Louis blues - then in 1970 (13) Vancouver Canucks (14) buffalo sabres joined, and since then the nhl has had many more expansion teams join the league and has also relocated alot of teams since! atlanta moved to Calgary, Colorado "rockies" to New Jersey, minnesota to dallas (although in 2000 minnestoa rejoined the nhl wich are now known as the "wild") quebec "nordiques" to coloarado, Winnipeg "jets" to phoenix and Hartford "whalers" to Carolina - today the nhl now stands at 30 hockey teams - SO THERE NEVER WAS AN ORIGINAL 8 NHL TEAMS? MAYBE YOU COULD ARGUE THERE WAS AN ORIGINAL 10?? BUT THE NHL REALLY PROSPERED DURING THE "ORIGINAL 6" NHL TEAM ERA!! THATS WHY THEY ARE REFFERED TO AS THE "ORIGINAL 6" AND ALL 6 OF THE ORIGINAL TEAMS ARE STILL IN THE NHL AND HAVE NEVER RELOCATED

Added by another user:

"The Original six" is a term coined in 1967, when the NHL expanded from 6 teams to 12, and refers to the six teams that comprised the league from 1942 - 1967. The NHL was originally formed on November 26, 1917 by the 1) Montreal Canadiens, 2) Montreal Wanderers, 3) Ottawa Senators and 4) Quebec Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs announced they were unable to play during the inaugural season due to financial issues the charter members granted a temporary franchise to the 5) Toronto Arena Company. This team became the St. Patricks in 1919 and the Maple Leafs in 1926. The Bulldogs became the Hamilton Tigers in 1920. In 1924 the NHL added the 6) Montreal Maroons and 7) Boston Bruins. In 1925 the Tigers franchise was revoked due to a wildcat players strike in the league finals. Their contracts were bought by the expansion 8) New York Americans. Since this involves a revocation, the NHL considers the Americans as a separate team from the Bulldogs/Tigers. 1925 also saw the addition of the 9) Pittsburgh Pirates (not the baseball team). If you go against the NHL's official stance and view the Americans as a de facto relocation that would give you the first 8 teams in the NHL.

The New York Rangers were added in 1926, and the Detroit Cougars (later Red Wings) and Chicago Black Hawks (later Blackhawks) in 1927. The Pirates (known for one year as the Quakers) folded in 1931. The Senators (St. Louis Eagles for one year) folded in 1935 and the Maroons in 1938. The Americans folded during WW II in 1942 due to a lack of players caused by enlistment, which leaves us with the so called "Original Six".

When were the original six teams formed?

The "Original Six" refers to the teams that made up the NHL before the first major expansion in the 1960's. Actually, the term "Original Six" is somewhat misleading as it implies that the NHL was always made up of six teams prior to expansion in 1967. When the New York Americans folded at the end of the 1941/42 season, it left the league with six teams and it remained that way until expansion. Prior to 1942, the NHL had varying numbers of teams as members, not just the so-called "Original Six".
