An official ruled that the Colts had recovered a fumble by Dallas running back Duane Thomas near the Colts' goal line. The Cowboys argued that Thomas had simply let go of the ball when the play was over. Nonetheless, the ball was given to the Colts, denying the Cowboys a chance to extend their lead.

The Colts eventually won the game 16-13 on a last-second field goal by Baltimore kicker Jim O'Brien.
