while playing football in 1823, Webb Ellis 'caught the ball in his arms… and on catching the ball, instead of retiring backwards, rushed forwards with the ball in his hands towards the opposite goal'. The name Rugby is directly taken from the town of Rugby and the School in which the game was first developed in Warwickshire. England.
Rugby was the name of the school in Warwickshire, England where the game originated in 1864.

Rugby was first played in its current, standardised form by William Webb Ellis at Rugby School in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, in 1823. Hence, rugby got it's name from the school where it was first played.

Rugby, England (1823)

This is probably true but I like this little story. Some men where having a football match but, for some reason, one of the guys picked up the ball and ran through everyone and placed it over the goal line. He claimed he learned that in Ireland but this story coeld very well be about Irish Gaelic football rather than rugby
