What is the difference between the four Major Championships of golf?

The first Major of the year is The Masters, always played at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia in early April. It is renowned for the lush green grass, lightening fast greens and abundance of blooming flowers. The Champion wins a Green Jacket as well as the first place cheque and a life time exemption to play the Masters. The most famous holes are 11, 12 and 13 known as Amen corner, as it is a stretch of difficult holes with a water hazard on each hole.

The second major is the US Open, played in mid June, played at a course selected by the USGA each year. The courses are usually very long with fast contoured greens and thick, thick rough. The field is limited to 156. The winner receives the first place cheque, and the US Open Trophy, and a 10 year exemption to the US Open.

The third major of the year is The Open Championship, usually held in mid July. In 1860-1870 the winner received a belt, which was replaced with the Claret Jug in 1871 after Young Tom Morris was allowed to keep the belt for winning the Championship 3 times. The Champions also win life time exemption to the event, on the course which they won on. The Open has been held in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. Currently there are 9 courses in the rotation, with St. Andrews being used every 5 years. The Courses usually play hard and fast with many contoured greens and fairways and bunker which are sometimes hard to get out of. The weather at The Open is usually very unpredictable.

The final major is the PGA Championship, which is held in August. One of the distinguishing features of this event is that it is only for Professional Golfers, whereas the other three allow amateurs in the field. The winner receives the first place cheque and the Wanamaker Trophy, as well as a life time exemption to this event. First played in 1916, this Championship began as a Matchplay event, and in 1958 changed to a Strokeplay event. The courses are all in the US and are selected by the PGA of America.
