Joe Paterno took this honor away from Bobby Bowden and currently leads Bowden by one victory. This is up to date as of September 29, 2008. There are, however, several disputes to this record. But, Paterno is credited with the record by the overwhelming majority of football scholars.

Bobby Bowden is a, now retired, college football coach. He holds the NCAA record for most career and bowl wins as a Division I FBS coach. Mr. Bowden coached Florida State from 1976 until 2009 during which he netted himself and the University twelve Atlantic Coast Conference championships.
Brett Favre holds that record.
In Division I football, according to the 2008 NCAA Division I football records manual, the record is 40 and held by Nebraska (1962-2001) and Notre Dame (1889-1932, Notre Dame did not field teams in 1890 and 1891).
