In the original 1940's comic books, it was Boxing and Jiu Jitsu (Judo), in other words the Martial Arts practice by American police officers of the time. In some early works he even carried a gun. That was Batman then though, Batman NOW, his martial arts repertoire runs the gamut; he does everything from grappling martial arts, to Karate, to Kung Fu, to Tai Chi, he does it all. Because he has studied so many styles, what ends up happening is that most writers will say he has developed his own unique style. The character is 6'2 inches tall, and his weight ranges from 220 to 240 lbs depending on the writer. Far as physical development, he has the strength of a top bodybuilder (who can usually bench around 400 lbs), the stamina of an Iron Man athlete, and the agility of a gymnast. Could a guy as big as Batman do all that acrobatic stuff? Well, pro wrestlers do it all the time, and some of those guys are HUGE. Its not unreasonable, although, as some Batman writers have commented, because of the way Bruce Wayne is built (he's kind of a big man), during his training one of the things he most struggled with, was the development of agility. Batman emphasizes agility training more than anything, because given his body's size its his biggest weakness, and being one of those "turn a weakness into a strength people," he has trained so obsessively, that, while not as agile as the likes of catwoman, he can still keep up with her and hold his own. One of the things crooks in the Batman fiction find most frightening about the character, is his agility; he's 6'2 and 230 lbs, but he moves like a 5'2 and 120 lb gymnast. Actually, even faster than that; its part of the character's mistique and according to writers, that agility, given his size, almost makes it seem like he isn't even human. The idea, of an agile large man, if you think about it carefully, agile like Batman, IS somewhat frightening. I need to point out, that Batman suffers from mental illness; he never got over the trauma of the death of his parents, its what drives him on, he suffers obsessive complusive disorder, if I had to name his mental illness. Only an obsessive compulsive man, would train so obsessesively, they would overcome their genetic limits regarding their agility. A small man is limited by muscle size, how much strength he can generate, however when a small man can train himself to bench press 400 lbs, that scares the hell out of people. A big man's genetic handicap, is lack of agility for obvious reasons; a big man simply can't move as well naturally as a smaller one. However, if he trains hard, REALLY hard, once again, it scares the hell out of everyone. One of the hallmarks of Batman, almost from his creation, is the character's incredible agility, which I feel "Gotham Knights" did not emphasize enough. There are gymnists in the real world, who can't move as well as Batman. Only a mentally ill man, with Bruce Wayne's size and build, could accomplish those levels of agility. I'm sure you've seen "The Dark Knight;" even his classic arch rival the Joker said it "you're as crazy as we are." The difference between Batman's mental illness though, and the criminals he fights, is that Batman has chaneled it in an altruistic manner, whereas the dangerous psychopaths who are his enemies, live in their own world. Personally I respect D.C. comics; whereas Marvel won't go near white collar crime, some of the most despicable villains in the DC universe range from street thugs, to white collar corporate criminals (e.g. Lex Luthor), and even, movie celebrities (Clayface). Marvel, has a tendency to use made up bad guys, completely made up, however DC often draws is inspiration from real world villains. Rumors persist for example that Lex Luthor was inspired by Howard Hughes, it was either him or some other Tycoon. [[User:67.148.120.72|67.148.120.72]]stardingo747

Batman most definitely uses martial arts training. He does not have super powers and does engage in actual hand-to-hand combat. He employs kicks, chops, slices, joint locks and throws: all signature "martial arts" moves. (For Marvel, your go-to example might be Daredevil, along with Iron Fist.)
