In 1939, Vern Wicklund built a deck in Cloquet, Minnesota. He and his friends called it a "bunker." He (along with two relatives) patented the first snowboard 22 years later. However, many consider Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan, to have been the inventor of the first true snowboard in 1965.

In France designers were looking at designing a new type of sport that had the same properties as ski's so they thought up the snowboard and America loved the idea and started making hundreds of thousands of snowboards and became a popular sport in America, although some Americans will say there country invented the snowboard they are very wrong, they only picked up the idea of snowboarding and did not invent the snowboard, France made the snowboard.

Snowboarding has been around since the 1920s. Boys and men would tie plywood or wooden planks from barrels to their feet using clotheslines and horse reins in order to steer themselves down hills. 30 years later an eight grade student from New Jersey, Tom Sims, created what he called a "ski board" as a woodwork project. His invention was a rounded plank of pine with a nose kick in the front and carpet on top to supply the much needed traction. Commercially the snowboard didn't catch on until 1965. Sherman Poppen, a frustrated father trying to get his kids out of the house on a freezing winters day, invented the Snurfer (snow and surf together). A few years later, Snurfer was seen by most people as a kid's toy.

Meanwhile Dimitrije Milovich, inspired by sliding down snowy hills on meal trays, began producing boards for himself and friends. In 1972 he would begin to produce the first snowboards as we know them today and experimenting with iron edges. Winterstick, as he called his company, is still producing snowboards today- the classic swallowtail deep powder snowboard is especially popular.
