Mountain Biking developed in both Marin County, California and Crested Butte, Colorado (both in the US) in the late 1960's.
Marin County, California, is often held as the birthplace of MTB-ing.
Most credit for the first mountain bikes go to people in northern California, near San Francisco. People used to ride old coaster-brake bikes down long mountain trails, and then they started strengthening them with sturdy parts and components. In the 1980 time frame, framebuilders started making mountain-specific frames. And Specialized had one of the first mass-produced mountain bikes with the StumpJumper.

Today, mountain bikes are designed and built all over the world.
