Since skateboards began in the late 50's in CA with the Surfing crowd the first skateboards were made one by one as individual pieces. In 1963 when Skateboarding was at it's peak companies like Jack's, Hobie, and Markaha were in business in CA. Then, in 1965 skateboarding popularity crashed and companies folded so people were back to making their own skateboards. In 1972 Frank Nasworthy invented urethane skateboard wheels and opened a company called Cadillac Wheels and skateboarding was again popular. In the spring of 1975 skateboarding took another step toward the sport we see today. In Del Mar, CA the Zephyr team showed the world what skateboarding could be while riding their boards like no one else had. That took the hobby to something serious and exciting. Yet, by end of the 1970's skateboarding faced its second crash in popularity. Many skate parks closed and skateboarding was back to the underground movement it once was. During the 1980's small skateboard companies owned by skateboarders started cropping up. New shapes and styles were tried. It has been an up and down sport, but just keeps "rolling" along.
