∙ 8y agoKarate is made up of two kanji characters. Te means hand. Kara has several interpretations. Originally it was used to represent China, so you had China Hand, as the martial art was a blend of traditional Okinawa Wrestling, called te and Chinese White Crane Kung Fu. In the early part of the century the island was attempting to distance itself from China and used the other meaning of kara, empty. So the current interpretation is Empty Hand.
