Bob Hayes has the world record in the 100 yard dash. This record was set in the year 1963. This is a separate race from the 100 meter dash.
In 1963, Bob Hayes set a world record of 9.1 in the 100-yard dash. However, at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Usain Bolt established a world record in the 100-meter dash of 9.69. Today, sprint distances are measured in meters, not yards, and 100 meters = 109.361 yards. As Mr Hayes in his record-breaking effort ran 1 yard every .91 seconds, his time for 100 meters would have been at least 9.95 seconds, or more than 1/4-second (.26 seconds) slower than the record set by Mr. Bolt in 2008.
There is no record for Bob Hayes in the 40, but the late ESPN.com columnist Ralph Wiley once wrote that Hayes reportedly ran a 60-yard dash in 5.28 seconds on a cinder track. In the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Hayes won the gold medal in the 100 meters at 10.05.
According to several online sources, Bob Hayes' time in the 40 yard dash wasn't recorded. See The Fastest 40 Yard Dash Ever.
