BMX tires can be purchased at traditional big box retailers such as Walmart, Kmart and Target in their sporting goods departments. However, for better quality products and wider selection, it is more prudent to shop at sporting-specific stores such as Dunham's Sports and MC Sports. Also, shop online stores such as "Pro Board Shop" and "Action Village" that cater to bikers and have higher quality products.

BMX Wheels are actually not too difficult to find. Check out local dealerships and sites on the web that specialize in these wheels. Often the price on the web is cheaper than in stores.

If the only bike riding you do is on packed dirt or pavement is there any reason for you to buy a mountain bike instead of a road bike?

I would think not. A normal bike has thinner wheels. It is lighter and provides less friction. It is easier to pedal forward. A Mountain Bike is however very sturdy. If you are much over weight, then a mountain bike would probably be a better choice. A road bike has narrow tires with minimal tread, while mountain bikes have large knobby ones. Road bikes are used by the stereotypical "cyclist", such as Lance Armstrong. Mountain bikes often have suspension, and are rugged and strong enough to hold up for jumps, bumps and drops. A "true" road bike really isn't that useful for everyday purposes. The drop bar gives a very hunched over posture which takes some getting used to. And won't really do you much good until you hit speeds of 20-25 MPH. The thin tires are prone to flats and will be quite nervous on dirt surfaces. For casual, everyday riding a hybrid is a much better choice. It'll have a more upright riding position, tires that are wide enough to be a bit rugged, yet narrow enough to roll a lot easier than wide knobblies. If it hasn't from the start, hybrids can use fenders, have a rack fitted ASO. Or if you have the money and the dedication - get a cyclocross bike. It'll only be a tiny bit slower than a road bike on pavement, but it can use tires wide enough to do well on dirt and even snow.
