The first MLB night game was played on May 24th, 1935 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati between the Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Reds won 2-1.

"The first game played under lights by major league teams didnot take place in Cincinnati. It occured in (an exhibition game) February 21, 1931 at (Houston Buffs) Buff Stadium in Houston (Texas) between the Chicago White Sox and New York Giants. It was the first time two major league teams played under the lights. During the 1930 season Waco was the first in the (Triple AAA Minor League) Texas League to install lights. Before that season ended, Houston, San Antonio and Shreveport were playing night games. The first night game in the majors was held in 1935." - Gene Elston - Voice of the Houston Astros from 1962 to 1986.

Controversy exists over which league was first "major league." The National Association (NA) existed from 1871 to 1875; while the National League (NL) has existed from 1876 till today.

In 1968, Major League Baseball (MLB) founded a "Special Baseball Records Committee" specifically to rule on these matters, and decided that records from the National Association would NOT count in "major league" record totals. Thus, if Joe Schmoe got 100 hits in 1875 while playing in the NA, and 150 hits in 1876 while playing for a NL team, his official total number of hits in MLB competition would be recorded as 150, not 250.

Whether that is what SHOULD have been decided is still argued today.

The first NA game was on 1871 May 4.

The first NL game was on 1876 April 22.
