It is very difficult to put dates on warfare. The Japanese created Martial Arts as soon as they started fighting. Over the centuries some of them have become more codified and can trace their roots several 100 years, but the history still goes back in time.

The Japanese martial art of Jiu-Jitsu is the sources of Judo, but both types of martial art are still practiced. . Both come from Japan. The ending "do" and "itsu" indicate a different approach to the martial skil. "Do" is associated with a martial art with the implication if a knowledge of the philosophical underpinnings, it has fewer strikes. "Itsu" which mean essentially "technique" contains the grappling moves with the strikes. The average person that does not practice any forms of martial arts may believe that Judo and Jui-Jitsu are the same thing. This is probably because they sound, and sometimes look, very similar. But, in fact, Judo and Jui-Jitsu are two different types of martial arts.

Jui-Jitsu was a fighting style that was developed by Samurai warriors. This style of fighting was meant to enhance fighting with or without weapons and to give a warrior who was fighting with only a few weapons a chance against an opponent who was heavily armored. The art relied on striking, throwing, restraining, evading, bending, and escaping.

Judo put more emphasis on technique and forms (or kata). Skills developed include free fighting and throwing techniques. Moving away from the all out Jujitsu techniques made judo more popular as a sport ) and didn't rely on the death or injury of an attacker to save a person from attack). It should be noted that the absence of strikes does not mean Judoka do not learn to defend against them.
