Jean Nicolet established a trading post in Green Bay in 1634. Pere Claude Allouez established St Francis Xavier mission at Rapids Des Peres, now called De Pere. Charles de Langlade made Green Bay his home in 1764. The French built a fort and later the British built a fort. The Americans built a fort here after the American Revolution called Fort Howard. Then in the 1800s, the lumber trade came to Green Bay. Wisconsin became a state in 1848. In the 1850s, Belgian, German, Scandinavian, Irish and Holland immigrants came into the state. The Belgians settled in nearby Door and Kewaunee Counties and the Scandinavians settled in northern Door County. Green Bay incorporated as a city in 1854. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad came to Green Bay in 1862. Henry Rahr started a brewery in 1866.Papermaking came to Green Bay in 1895. That year also saw Fort Howard become part of the city of Green Bay. The Green Bay Packers started in 1923. In 1926, Green Bay Box Companybegan making cardboard boxes. 1in 1959, Vince Lombardi came to the Green Bay Packers and made them a winning team, including winning the first two Super Bowls. The Port Plaza Mall was built in downtown and thrived for twenty years.
