When was Rugby Union Invented?

Rugby union was invented in 1823 by a 16 year old boy, William webb Ellis. He was playing a game of soccer when he suddenly picked up the ball and ran towards the opponets goal and that's how it formed.

The game was actually football (soccer) back in 1823. At that time in Rugby School Warwickshire England, public School boy William Web - Ellis was playing football where in the rules allowed a player to pick up the ball but the rule of the day was the ball carrier had to retire toward their own team mates to pass the ball - The ball could be passed by kicking it in any direction. Web Ellis collected the ball and ran forward toward the opposing goals. This concept caught on and more pupils in the school took to this and the games new concept carried on. Thereafter pupils leaving school took the games idea to university and even the armed forces where the forward carrying ball concept caught on and more teams took this on board. - Clubs started to form with the oldest being Guys Hospital London. In 1870 a committee of men met and decided to formalise the rules and the ball carrying rule was taken out and made an offense. many of the clubs did not like this and broke away from what be came the Football Association - The clubs thereafter formed the RFU - Rugby Football Union. and formalised the rules - Rugby as we know it was born....
