Although I can't say for Anchorage in particular, the Alaskan ski season generally starts early in December. It runs all the way into the Spring (around mid-April). The link below has daily ski conditions for a particular ski resort in the Anchorage area, Alyeska.

It all depends on where you live. In certain regions on the US for instance, skiing can start as early as October. Whereas if you live in TN or NC skiing can start in Mid-late december. It depends on many things such as elevation and latitude.

Actually, Alaska is an year round destination for skiing. You can come anytime you want. But, Alaska's peak season generally runs from the first week in February to the second week in May. And if you want to go heli skiing, you can come February to first week of March!

It greatly depends on the amount of snow in the mountains but usually Banff opens earlier than the rest of ski resorts in Canada. Ski season in Canada opens 1st week of December. Hence, Ski season in Banff is a week earlier and ends a bit later.
