Usually the referee isn't allowed to skip the overtime and go straight to shootout. It should follow immediately after the overtime if no one scored. Unless you saw a specific case where something else happened :/ otherwise I did not think that the ref's can do that

Hope this helped!! XD

How does hockey overtime work?

Overtime is used when there is a tied game at the end of the third period. The amount of time in that overtime is determined by the referee. If a team scores during that overtime, the game is over and they have won. If the game remains a tie, overtime periods are added unless otherwise stated by the referee that there will be a shootout.

In Olympic hockey do teams play with four players on a side in overtime?

5-5 is played with 20 minute period of overtime. this is sudden-death, however.

What is the typical length of a Kings Hockey game from start to finish including timeouts and breaks?

Sixty minutes. A hockey game consists of three twenty-minute periods. If the score is tied at the end of the third period, the teams play a five-minute sudden-death overtime period. If neither teams score in the overtime, the game ends as a tie. In the playoffs, games cannot end in a tie. So instead of a five-minute overtime, a playoff game has an extra 20-minute sudden-death overtime period. If neither team scores, then there is another 20-minute overtime, and so on, until someone scores. There was a Detroit-Montreal game in 1956 that went to the sixth overtime, finally ending at 176 minutes 30 seconds--almost as long as three ordinary games! Detroit scored in the sixth overtime to win the game 1-0.

What is period one in hockey?

The first of 3 even amounts of time in a hockey game. Hockey has 3 periods per game. It is usually called the 1st period, not period one. Technically an overtime counts is a period, which means games can have an unlimited number of periods. I think the record for an NHL game is 6 overtimes, or 9 periods.

That means that the timing clock is stopped, each time the refferee blows his whistle to stop play, for a penalty, an injury, or when a goal is scored. The offcial time keeper has two stop watches that are the offcial method of keeping the games time.

How long is each period in an ice hockey game?

There are three (3) twenty (20) minute periods during regulation time. One (1) five (5) minute overtime period during the regular season, and an unlimited number of twenty (20) minute periods in playoff overtime.

How many periods are played in a regulation hockey game before overtime is played?

In the NHL, there is one (1) five (5) minute 'sudden death' overtime period during the regular season, followed by a shoot-out if necessary. There is an unlimited amount of twenty (20) minute 'sudden death' periods during the playoffs.

What is the difference between a regular hockey and a playoff hockey game?

In the NHL teams play regular games during the season. The 8 teams from each division with the most points at the end of the season get to play in the playoffs (2 points for a win, 1 point for a loss in overtime and 0 for a loss). In the playoffs two teams compete in a best of 7 tournament. The winner gets to play in the next round against another team, the loser starts training for the next season. The team that wins all their best of 7 tournaments win the stanly cup. Also in a regular season game if there is a tie at the end of the game they go into ONE overtime period and then a shootout (teams shoot 3 times the team with goals win if still tied after 3 shots teams take turns until they score) IN A PLAYOFF GAME after one period of overtime THERE IS NO SHOOTOUT. They just play another period of overtime. (In overtime for both types of games both teams have 4 players on the ice instead of 5.) I hope that answers your question! :D

3rd period and no score how long do they play in hockey?

In regular season play, if the score is tied after the third period, they play a 4 on 4 sudden death overtime for 5 minutes. If nobody scores they then go to a shootout, with the highest amount of goals scored determining the winner. During the playoffs, the overtime periods are 20 minutes in length and are unlimited in number as to periods to be played.

How many periods in college hockey?

20 minutes in each of the 3 periods for a total of 60. Overtime is a single sudden death 5 minute period. If there is no goals in OT then it becomes a tie unless it is the playoffs.
